Southfork – “Out and About”
Celebrating the Christmas Holiday
By Susan Slater
This community fosters lasting friendships and a calendar of events keeping everyone engaged and connected. Each month, Southfork’s activity planners Cindy and Midge organize a special outing called “Out and About.” Fourteen residents ventured outside the park for a memorable evening of dining and holiday magic. They dined at Red Robin, where they were welcomed by Fun Bill, a server whose name tag matched his lively personality.
After dinner, everyone made their way to the heart of Wiregrass Mall for a Christmas Tree light show. The festive music from Trans-Siberian Orchestra and children dancing in the snow set the magical moodwithdazzling colored lights flashing.
Midge, who relocated from Kingston, NY, moved to Southfork to be near her parents. Her husband, a veteran and retired IBM employee, has found solace in the tight-knit atmosphere. Linda Kelley expressed her appreciation for these gatherings, noting, “We are not just neighbors, we are family.”
Cindy, a permanent resident who moved from Michigan two and a half years ago, is known as the “brains behind the operation” for organizing activities. She and her husband are active outdoors, enjoying hiking, biking, and participating in Tai Kwan Do and Silver Sneakers.
Sue Kersch is known for her love of travelling all 50 states and cruises. She takes pride in the Southfork Women’s Club, raising money for charities such as providing pet food for Meals on Wheels recipients. Among the group at dinner was Gary, who braved being one of only three men among the eleven ladies. Gary serves as Vice President of Southfork’s Homeowners Association.
What truly sets Southfork apart is the spirit of community. With most residents living there year-round, friendships flourish. The “Out and About” outings, along with numerous other activities, like dogs and burgers before Bingo, holiday events, golf cart parades and Taco Tuesday, ensures that Southfork is more than just a place to live—it’s a family.
