Life in Gem Estates

Community Spirit, Unique Events, and Lasting Friendships

By Susan Slater

Gem Estates, established in 1976 by the Cahill family was originally a pig farm. Many residents hail from Michigan and Maine, often inheriting homes from parents.

Itisa hidden gem, being that it is land-owned. Land-owned residents experiencemore stabilityand are free from unreasonable lot rents.

The most anticipated event in Gem Estates is the yearly park-wide yard sale, held on the second weekend of January. A week before, residents held yard sales on their lots.

Any unsold items are brought to the clubhouse to sell. This istheir majorfundraiser, helping to keep HOA fees low. There were raffles with twenty-seven themed baskets, offering items like handmade quilts, luggage, food baskets, beauty products, and more.

Volunteers preparetables onThursday, and residents bring their goods on Friday. That evening, residents get first pick before opening to thepublic on Saturday. There is also a bake sale, coffee, and lunch including chili and chili dogs—perfect for a chilly January day. By 2pm, the Salvation Army truck is filled with all leftovers.Volunteerismis strong in this community.

Gem Estates has activities like weekly coffee hours to provide updates on community happenings, celebrate birthdays and anniversaries, and identify residents in need of support. Recreational activities include shuffleboard, pickleball, game nights and dances.

Residents have a car wash area and a dog park for fur babies. Their water system is also distinctive: well water is the primary source,  but can switch to city water if necessary.

This park has not been without challenges. Hurricane Milton caused significant damage, leading to the complete loss of two homes and damage to others. Many homes were restored or resold.

Gem Estates is a placewhere events and activities bring people together, and where neighbors become friends and family.
